“The answer to the question, ‘what’s your favourite animal?’, has always been an easy one for me; explaining why wolves have captured my heart, is a different matter altogether. Perhaps it’s their quiet elegance, their strength, their silence, their enchanting form of communication, their sense of community, their captivating gaze, their beauty. They are a creature I not only feel a deep love and connection with, but I also have a lot of respect for. When I heard about Takaya’s story, I felt a deep regret for his loss of life, and beyond that, for the loss of yet another beautiful animal at the hands of humans. The ideology behind trophy hunting is something that has always perturbed and perplexed me, and the thought of an innocent wild animal being killed to satisfy a momentary human desire makes my chest ache. Over the years, I have learned not only the significant role wolves play in ecosystems, but also how often the government conducts wolf culls due to drops in caribou numbers (usually caused by loss of habitat). Although Takaya’s story of resilience and self isolation is an unusual one, the end of his story is all too common for BC wolves. When I heard about the opportunity to create art to commemorate Takaya, and through his legacy support other wolves, I immediately took up a paintbrush. As devastating as Takaya’s story is, I truly hope his story brings awareness to this issue in BC, and abroad.”

Cameryn is an active adventurer who has a deep love of animals and being outdoors. Growing up on the West Coast of Canada (living primarily on Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Lil’wat lands), she has been able to foster her passion for adventure, by exploring the beautiful nature around her. Cameryn has had a love of art for as long as she can remember. She enjoys using all types of mediums to create her pieces, but one of the mediums you will see her working with most, is oil paints due to their thick, rich colours and the connection it gives her to her grandpa. While Cameryn has always loved and respected all animals, she has always felt a special love and connection with wolves, and their seemingly ancient gaze and beauty.
