Artist Statement

“My husband and I and our German shepherd, Akaja were gifted with a very close encounter with Takaya at the end of January. On our morning walk, I was ahead of my husband and Akaja, when she suddenly stopped in her tracks. I turned around to see what was happening and Takaya ran right behind me to cross Linden St. by Richardson St. We watched him move swiftly down Linden, then leap through a backyard on his journey to James Bay. It was an amazing, magical experience. We were stunned by his beauty and his peaceful way. We are grateful that our experience with Takaya guided us to connect with Cheryl and begin discussions for the First Annual Takaya Lone Wolf International Arts Show. It is indeed a gift that Takaya has inspired so many during this time of pandemic. Forever a beacon of light and a focus of love.”

Artist Bio

Shirley and her husband were fortunate to be immersed in the arts while living in Japan for 11 years (1989-2000). Shirley studied sumie and watercolor painting in Tokyo. She has also taken a course at Melanie Furtado Sculpture Studio in Victoria, BC. She is a gallery co-owner featuring Canadian Indigenous art in downtown Victoria. Since its opening in 2001, the gallery has participated in four art shows in France, in La Roche Sur Foron, Annecy, and an art expo in Nimes. Her paintings were selected for the annual art expo in Beijing, China in 2016.
